ms. sierra ray
Sierra Ray is an accomplished vocalist originally from Sacramento, California. She began singing at age two, and joined her first choir at age 9, in fourth grade. She continued to study through middle school, high school, college, and now graduate school. She performed in the treble choir, Concert Choir, Vocal Ensemble and Choral union in high school. She's taken roles in musical productions including "Bye, Bye, Birdie", "Anything Goes", "Hairspray", "Thoroughly Modern Millie", "Suessical" and "Alice and Wonderland". Sierra also studied tap, hip hop and cheerleading. Sierra Graduated from Sheldon High School in May, 2012.
Sierra relocated to New York City to attend New York University in 2012. She majored in Music Education at NYU, studying both the Voice and piano. Sierra Performed in the NYU Women's Choir and Concert Choir. She also continued her cheerleading as part of NYU's Competition Cheerleading Team. She developed close working relationships with some of New York City's best music teachers Rachel Goodman, Jeannie Cascio, Catherine Plichta, Paul Speiser and more.
In 2018, Sierra decided to head back to school to obtain her Masters in Kodaly Music Education from the American Kodaly Institute at Loyola University of Maryland. In 2016 upon finishing her undergraduate studies Sierra began teaching at J.H.S. 383 Philippa Schuyler for the Gifted and Talented. There she helped expand the music department, created her own curriculum, taught general music to grades 5-8 and directed auditioned 7th and 8th grade choirs. Under her direction 15 students gained admission to Brooklyn High School of the Arts, 3 to Talent Unlimited, 1 to Laguardia, and 1 to the Salute to Music Citywide Chorus.
Sierra is an active member of NafMe, NYSSMA, and MEANYC, professional music educator organizations. Sierra believes in quality music education for all students and that all students are able to accomplish musical learning and creativity. Through the use of different musical pedagogies, games and literature, Sierra brings fun, creativity, and energy to the music classroom. Sierra's curriculum is strongly based in the Kodaly philosophy with some inspiration from Dalcroze and the Orff-Schulwek Association.
Sierra is incredibly excited to begin the next part of her journey at PS/MS 84!
